DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) - The national committee for the counting of votes in Dakar has confirmed provisional results of the second round Senegalese presidential election which gave Abdoulaye Wade victory over incumbent President Abdou Diouf.

According to the committee's proclamation Wednesday night, Wade got 58.50 percent of the votes, while Diouf received 41.50 percent.

The results confirmed the first trends published Sunday evening by private media and should be made official by the Constitutional Council by Monday at the latest, it said.

Diouf, candidate of the ruling Socialist Party (PS) and president since 1981, clinched 41.30 percent of the votes in the first round held 27 February, compared to 31.10 percent for Wade, both of whom came ahead of the six other candidates in the race.

Some 1,666,045 voters out of the total 2,741,528 registered voters cast their ballots during the second round. Those who voted represented 60.77 percent of registered voters. Some 10,445 ballots were declared invalid.

Diouf and Wade were expected to meet Thursday at the presidential palace to discuss the modalities for the transition, according to reliable sources.

The sources added that transfer of power should take place 2 April.
