The event will take place: Date: June 3, 2000 Time: 10:00 PM – UNTIL Place: THE GAMBIAN SOCIETY COMMUNITY CENTER 1230 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, New York 10452 (Jerome Avenue Between 167th and 168th Street) THE MOVEMENT FOR THE RESTORATION FOR DEMOCRACY IN THE GAMBIA is committed to the preservation of Peace and Democracy in The Gambia, and condemns the recent massacre of Gambian Students by The Gambian Army and Paramilitary in violation of International Human Rights and Constitutional Rights. Gambian students have an inalienable and entrenched right under the 1997 Constitution, Section 25(d) to “freedom to assemble and demonstrate peaceably and without arms.” These rights are echoed and guaranteed under the African Charter and under the United Nations’ International Convention on Civil and Political Rights. The student demonstration was organized by the Gambian Students Union (GAMSU) in Banjul, Brikama and other towns to protest the torture and death of 19-year-old student, Ebrima Barry on 9 March by Brikama Fire Service personnel, and the rape of 13-year-old Binta Manneh by a police officer, on 10 March 2000. A minimum of 14 people (reports indicate that as many as 50 persons) were murdered, including Omar Barrow, a journalist at SUD FM Radio, Banjul, serving as a readily identifiable Red Cross volunteer. A minimum of 128 students and other persons were injured, many requiring hospitalization or treatment outside of the country. Royal Victoria Hospital indicated that there is a shortage of blood and that the medical situation is disastrous. Numerous students were reported missing, with hundreds of students rounded up for questioning, arrest and detainment at undisclosed locations throughout The Gambia. Distraught parents did not know whether their children were among the dead or detained. This fund raising event is a part of our ongoing effort to provide assistance to the families of the recovering victims of the student massacre as well as provide assistance to the GAMSU Students Legal Defense Fund. We must ensure that the arrested students’ right to a fair trail is not compromised due to lack of adequate funds in obtaining competent legal counsel. THE MOVEMENT FOR THE RESTORATION FOR DEMOCRACY IN THE GAMBIA appreciates your support and concern and looks forward to your presence at this event.
