Gambia-L: Another e-mail from one of my sources in the Gambia. Ebrima Ceesay _______________________________________________________________ Hello Ebrima, The following story was culled from the Sports Section of THE POINT, Monday, June 1, 2000 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Football fans in The Gambia were disappointed last Saturday as the GRTS failed to broadcast live the current Euro 2000 football matches, which they had advertised for over a month now. A release from GRTS and signed by the Director, Tombong Saidy expressed regret and mentioned the financial losses the company has incurred as a result. The GRTS release said that most African television stations have fruitful relations with Canal France International, CFI, which normally acquires broadcast rights to Africa for most international sporting events. "However TVAfrica, a South Africa-based company, has the exclusive free-to-air rights to broadcast the UEFA Euro 2000 football championship. The GRTS and most African television stations have signed an agreement with TVAfrica to broadcast the Euro 2000 matches on intelsat 804, Indian Ocean 64 degree east." All efforts by GRTS technicians to get these signals, the release said, were to no avail. Most African countries are also experiencing the same problems. The release cited Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal and Saudi Arabia as some countries that also failed to get the TVAfrica signals. The GRTS boss assured the public that all efforts are still in place to monitor the games. The release also disclosed that the GRTS would lose D200,000 in advertisements if it fails to broadcast the current Euro 2000 matches.
