Hi Maila, I once heard a story told by a 'Jaliba' over Radio Gambia (many years before Tombong became a turn-coat), about a European "explorer" who landed on the banks of our present day Gambia river. The area where he landed was under a ruler called Kambi. Thus those who witnessed his sudden arrival, inviting the European to Kambi, their chief said: "Na nga ta Kambi ya". Thus the name. There are of course been other versions, some of which have been told here on the L about the time I joined. Regards, Kabir. ----- Original Message ----- From: Touray, Maila <[log in to unmask]> To: <[log in to unmask]> Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2000 11:09 PM Subject: The Gambia > Can anybody answer the question, "why is our country named The Gambia?" > > Maila > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > > To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L > Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
