The news that the proprietor of Citizen FM radio,Babucarr Gaye has won his
appeal is indeed a very good news.
I can recalled that Babucarr and his news editor,Ebrima Sillah were detained
,on february 5,1998,after they were called for questioning at the NIA
following a news broadcast in a Citizen FM radio news at 10'clock
programme, that one of the directors at NIA Lamin Jobarteh had been sacked
from the Agency in connection with an alleged counterfeit scandal amounting
to D26,000.
On August 28,Magistrate Inyang at the Kanifing court illegally ordered
Mr.Gaye to foreit the radio station to The Gambia Government and to pay a
fine of D300 in default, serve one month in jail ''allegedly for operating a
radio station without licesce.''
All these actions were illegal and criminal geared to silent Mr.Gaye and
Mr.Sillah because at that material time, every Gambian had started to
develop the trust on the independent reports of the station.
Today Gambian Journalists in general are continuously going under harassment
and intimidation whilst going about their legitimate duties.
Mr.Gaye,i hope you will continue with the good job that you started and not
emulate the shameless bias reporting of radio Gambia.
The Independent media must exist and continue to inform the public, whether
the dictatorship like it or not.
