The clashes broke out late on Saturday after members of the rebel Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance -- MFDC -- began clearing farmers from an area in Tanasse. The farmers were said to have been passing information to the military about rebel activities. A senior military official said that five rebels had been killed in the fighting and many more seriously injured. Two soldiers were also killed. Sporadic gunfire in the area lasted several hours. A correspondent for the BBC in the area said the situation was confused and chaotic.
