KB Ps: Ebrima Ceesay, is everything all right? _______________________________________________________________________ British Military Delegation Visits The Gambia A high level military delegation from the United Kingdom led by Brigadier David Richards, Chief of Joint Force Operations recently concluded a visit to The Gambia. According to a press release from the British High Commission, Brigadier Richards, who had lead responsibility for the UK's short notice military operations, is travelling to Sierra for six weeks after a brief visit to Conakry and Dakar. The release states that the delegation had a meeting with President Jammeh during which they discussed the regional peace keeping efforts in Sierra Leone, regional developments and bilateral military cooperation. 'The President expressed The Gambia's continuing support for the UK's peace keeping efforts in Sierra Leone and underlined the importance of close cooperation on the ground and in the United Nations,' the release states. It went on to state that both President Jammeh and Brigadier Richards expressed mutual concern at recent events in Guinea Conakry and that they also reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation between The Gambia and the UK, 'recalling with satisfaction the resumption of officer training for Gambian cadets at Sandhurst Military Academy in September 2000 after a seven year gap'. At the end of their discussion, according to the release, President Jammeh honored Brigadier Richards for his contribution to regional peace keeping by presenting him with a millennium medal and sash. The release states that both the Vice President and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs echoed President Jammeh's message of support for the peacekeeping efforts of the United kingdom in Sierra Leone and restated their commitment to the development of Africa as a whole. The release further went on to refer to a lunch at Ngala Lodge hosted by the British High Commissioner during which Brigadier Richards and his delegation had productive discussions with the US Ambassador George Haley, the Service chiefs and senior military and civil servants. The Chief of Staff Colonel Baboucarr Jatta presented Brigadier Richards with a Gambia Armed Forces shield.
