FYI Will Batch Baldeh Succeed Alagie Conteh At Nawec? Daily Observer (Banjul) January 19, 2001 Banjul The Office of the President last evening issued a press release, announcing the removal of Alagie Conteh as managing director of Nawec. The release stated, "The Office of the President would like to inform the general public of the uncovering of a fraudulent contractual arrangement by the managing director of Nawec relating to the acquisition of a 6 megawatts Mirrlees Blackstone engine from MAN B&W in the UK. "The above contract, which was negotiated single-handedly by the managing director of Nawec was discovered not to be in the best interests of Nawec or the nation as the agreed cost of the 6 megawatts generator was found to be deliberately inflated. Investigations by His Excellency, the President, himself revealed that the managing director had reportedly claimed to the suppliers that he was dealing directly with His Excellency, the President and that a commission was expected to accrue to His Excellency for electioneering purposes in this transaction. "The managing director also deliberately misled the administration to believe that the generator would be installed and commissioned by July 2001 when in actual fact, the commissioning of the said generator will take nothing less than ten months from contract effectiveness. It was also disclosed that the entire contract, which was privately negotiated by the managing director was signed by the managing director himself and Mr. Lamin Sanneh as witness on behalf of Nawec whilst Messrs D Cliff and Abou Dandeh-Njie signed on behalf of Mirrlees Blackstone Ltd. "The public is hereby informed that this fraud was discovered by His Excellency, the President, upon suspicion that the cost of the generator had been inflated. "Under the circumstances, the managing director of Nawec (Alagie Conteh) has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect and the matter is being investigated further. All public officers are hereby being strictly warned to desist from such unbecoming behaviour as no effort would be spared in ensuring that culprits are severely dealt with." Meanwhile, it is being speculated that Batch Baldeh, a former managing director of the utilities corporation, will succeed Mr. Conteh on the hot seat at Nawec. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2001 Daily Observer.
