Few people realize that the enslavement of human beings still exists =
today. This panel brings together scholars, activists, and former slaves =
to take a look at historical and contemporary slavery in Mauritania, and =
compare and contrast that country's slave trade with that of the =
transatlantic slave trade that took place between Africa, Europe, and =
the Americas. The discussion is organized in conjunction with 651 ARTS's =
presentation of UDU, the New York premiere of a new music-theater by =
poet Sekou Sundiata and jazz composer Craig Harris. UDU explores the =
human drama of African slavery through song, spoken word, African =
American and West African rhythms, and European and Middle Eastern =
music.
