William Dixon ColleyMartyred A Principled Journalist, Humanist, Nationalist, Pan Africanist and Internationalist t the age of 87, William Dixon Colley has taken eternal rest. He has left a legacy which is difficult to fill. His journalism was one of professionalism, impartiality and independence. Since 1963, uncle Dixon helped to enlighten the Gambian people and kept the government on its feet. Uncle Dixon was always on the side of freedom and justice. He worked tirelessly to promote social conscience among the young. His paper, the Nation was a school for every young person who had the aim to be of service to his or her nation Press Release A veteran Gambian journalist William Dixon-Colley died on the morning of Wednesday January 17, 2001. He was 87 years old. Mr. Dixon-Colley returned to the Gambia in 1963 after a long stay abroad, mostly in the United Kingdom. In that same year, he set up his own newspaper called Africa Nyaato, which he later changed to The Nation in 1964. He was the editor until in the 1990s when it ceased publication because of his old age. Mr. Dixon-Colley has also been a founder member of the Gambia Press Union, for which he remained an honorary life member. He is survived by three sons and two daughters all of whom are in the United Kingdom. The executive and entire membership of the Gambia Press Union wish to pay tribute to this giant of Gambian journalism who has contributed immensely to the development of the press in this country. His uncompromising stance for the freedom of the press was unrivalled in this country.
