Course Aims: To strengthen the capacity of community radio and television stations in the areas of training/coaching and management. Course Rationale: Rapid technological change inside and outside the broadcast industry is creating opportunities worldwide for the development of affordable and effective radio and television services at community level - whether as part of a network or as an individual initiative. Community radio and television stations belong to the communities they serve. They are about giving a voice to the legitimate interests and concerns of people who live and work in the communities and about providing them with an important means of communication to improve the quality of their lives and further the development of their community. For many community stations the knowledge and skills they need to be a viable part of the community and to be effective in serving their local audience have to be acquired from the bottom up. Priority has to be given to building capacity in management and training/coaching. Course Content: Attention will be given to technological innovations in broadcasting of potential importance to community broadcasters, to the management of people and equipment, to financing, to audience research and to network building, to training needs analysis, to the development of training activities and to evaluation techniques. Course Language: English will be used in the 4 weeks in the Netherlands and the one-week courses for participants from Africa and Asia. The one-week course in Costa Rica will be in Spanish. Applicants: Applicants must be from Africa, Asia or Latin America. They should be (potential) trainers/coaches and/or managers of community radio and television stations. Applications can be accepted either from individuals with responsibilities for training and management wanting to attend both the Netherlands and the regional part of the course, or from teams of two - one person with training/coaching responsibilities to attend the Netherlands course and the other with management responsibilities to attend the regional part of the course. Requirements: Secondary education/professional education or training in media plus experience working in or for community radio and television and a good working knowledge of the course language: English. The one-week course in Costa Rica will be in Spanish and participants will require a good working knowledge of that language.
