culled from allafrica.com A student at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (UCAD) died Wednesday after fellow students and the security forces violently clashed during a demonstration, medical sources said Thursday. Balla Gueye, a first year law student, died of his injuries following clashes at the campus entrance gate between the students and the police who were trying to disperse the protestors, witnesses said. According to the Senegalese Press Agency, many students sustained injuries during the face-off which led to substantial damage of property in the five-hour encounter. A bus belonging to the public transport company Dakar Dem Dikk was burned, an office of the Senegalese National Lottery Agency was ransacked and the Centre for Student and Professional Orientation was severely damaged during the bloody protests, the agency said. Heavy security remained in place around the campus all afternoon Wednesday, it added. The students have been on strike since 12 January demanding, among other things, the granting of additional scholarships, laboratory equipment as well as the granting of full scholarships (rather than half scholarships) to all post-graduate students. Meanwhile, the executive committee of the Independent Union of University Lecturers strongly condemned Gueye's death. The committee has demanded an investigation into the incident. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html You may also send subscription requests to [log in to unmask] if you have problems accessing the web interface and remember to write your full name and e-mail address. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
