Some people just never change... --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Independent (Banjul) May 25, 2001 Posted to the web May 25, 2001 Pa Modou Faal Banjul, the Gambia Baba Jobe the assistant secretary at the Office of the President and chairman of the APRC youth wing was on Wednesday accused by party agents posted at the South Atlantic voter registration centre in Bakau of interfering with the work of the IEC officers. Speaking in an interview with The Independent Babucarr Jammeh a party agent at the centre said that since the commencement of the voter registration the officers had not encountered any problems until on Wednesday when a man by the name Salieu Jallow showed his identity card to the IEC but through the interview the officers found out that he came from Cassamance and did not have the valid document and he was therefore rejected. According to Mr. Jammeh at that point Baba Jobe protested to the IEC officers to give reason for rejecting the man, he further alleged that Mr. Jobe went on to the extent of even questioning the citizenship of the IEC officers after a short quarrel with them. He allegedly said that if the man was not registered nobody would be registered at the said centre. Mr. Jammeh also revealed to The Independent after the incident an old woman in front of Mr. Jobe came with an identity card but was rejected again by the elders because none of them can guarantee her citizenship and again Baba Jobe allegedly wanted to disrupt everything but there was a bitter argument between him and the party agents and even some of the people present after which he left. According Mr. Jammeh upon his departure the matter was reported to Malleh Sallah the operations manager of the IEC who said that nobody has the right to interfere with the work of their officials. He urged Gambians to desist from such practice, noting that the IEC would not allow such acts from anybody _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html You may also send subscription requests to [log in to unmask] if you have problems accessing the web interface and remember to write your full name and e-mail address. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
