An alleged coup plotter who recently defected to the ruling APRC Aji Fatim Mbenga of Kanifing Layout has declared that Bakau is no longer an opposition stronghold and that the APRC was going to wrest the seat from the UDP in the next National Assembly elections. Addressing an APRC meeting held at the Bakau Community Centre Wednesday, Aji Fatim said that since she joined the APRC a few weeks ago, many other people in Kanifing and Old Jeshwang have followed suit. Therefore she said come the next elections, Bakau constituency would be taken over by the APRC. She called on all those youths who wanted to get national identity cards or voters cards to contact her. Speaking at the meeting, the Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture and APRC national mobiliser Yankuba Touray said the UDP has lost two seats to the APRC in four years. He said during the recent bye-elections the UDP lost Kiang East constituency, which he said was followed by the recent defection of Almamy Touray of Niani. He accused the UDP and NRP of campaigning for sanctions to be imposed on The Gambia, which he described as "an act to destroy the country". The APRC he said has achieved a lot in just few years. "The groundnut industry has improved from less than 40,000 tones to more than 80,000 tones per season and from D150 per kilo to D300 per kilo" he said. Mr. Touray also promised that in two years time, girls will gain free education from primary to senior secondary level and that later this month a new 6 megawatt generator will be ordered and in July and October another new generator will be received in order to boost the electricity system. He also promised that there were plans to build a factory and also that a new all-inclusive system of tourism was being planned for some hotels and restaurants.
