It has been announced that 2 new 6.5 Megawaatt generators are on their way to the Gambia and these will be commissioned during July. An order for another new generator will be placed in October of this year. NEW SOLAR PANEL FACTORY. The Italian government is to help provide a $5 million (D80 million) solar energy appliance factory in the Gambia. This was reveled by the Gambia’s Consul-General in Italy, Francesco Cristina, after a meeting with president Yahya Jammeh at state house last Friday. Dr Cristina told reporters that his visit was a follow-up to an earlier one to discuss the solar energy project. The project is to be financed by the Italian government and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the production of solar panels for sale in the country and beyond is expected to begin towards the end of the year.Who says the Lord’s command can be denied the Gambian people indefinitely? (Culled from the Daily Observer) Sedat Jobe Signs ECOWAS Agreement GAMBIA TO HOUSE ECOWAS OBSERVATORY BUREAU According to GRTS radio, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Sedat Jobe and ECOWAS Executive Secretary Lansana Kuyateh yesterday signed the ECOWAS mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peace Keeping and Security in West Africa. The mechanism is aimed at promoting peace and security in the subregion. Under the agreement, four regional observatory bureaus will be set up to supervise and provide information on matters relating to conflicts. One of the observatory bureaus will be based in Banjul and will oversee Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania and Cape Verde. Speaking at the signing ceremony at his office, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affair Dr. Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe dilated on the aims of the agreement and thanked the ECOWAS Secretary for his commitment to peace and security. In his speech, Mr. Lansana Kuyate also thanked the Gambia Government for its cooperation and determination to ensure lasting peace and security in the sub-region. He said the agreement shows that Africa is in transition politically, socially and economically. The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Musa Sillah, the Interior and Religious Affairs Secretary, Ousman Badjie and the Permanent Secretary of Defence Essa Khan witnessed the signing ceremony.
