Dear Halifa,

I would be surprised if you respond to this mail but i will write to you if only for the record. I am not in your shoes for that matter i could not say for sure what you or your paty's response should be regarding an alliance with the rest of the opposition. But given the amount of time that your party and the whole  opposition had to contemplate on how to remove Yaya i think an alliance would have been an already thoughtout strategedy.Unless Yaya is not what i perceive him to be,i think any decision that you arrive at at this moment should be considered as emergency remedy.

I am baffled that somehow it seems the opposition may not see Yayas plot to legitimise his grip on power. If the opposition were to split it will overtily indicate to the west Yayas claim that he is a better representative of the Gambian people. This is because however small his views  will intersect with one or the other of the opposing parties if there is a split.

In that case even if he steals the election it cannot seem so bad,But with an all united front of old and new former opposing parties against him even the idea that he is that bad will stun the west.

I understand your premise that it takes a well informed population to change  a country, but i must stress the fact that it only took 4 young soldiers to change our destiny 7 years ago.The majority of the Gambia is not educated so they have little choice but trust the few that are with their representation. Secondly if our goal is to first educate the majority and then put in place a good governance that will mean many more years of destruction.

Iam sure you will agree with me that any atmosphere that come out of this alliance would be much more conducive to a national enlightenment campagne and education.Even that freedom alone to freely campagne without fear of intimidation should be a reason the opposition get together.Quite frankly i think it will be easier to engage your brothers in the opposition parties then some of their die hard followers. So any little change of opinion there in secured will translate to a wide margin of puplic awareness. There are peolple and many of them i might add that will not even listen to you just because it is not coming from their leader or this. But if what you stand for is inparted in their leader they will hold on to it with all their heart. As frustrating as that maybe be it is true in African politics.

There is as your may know a very high likelihood that even if you all unite and achieve 90% of the votes Yaya can still say no to the will of the people.Having a united front will give you a much needed chance to initiate a peaceful civil disobedience rally to force him out. This has become a realsitic alternative to elections in the world since elections are controlled by already sitting ducks like Yaya Jammeh in many parts of the world. This maybe our only alternative at the end of the day.

Believe me or not Yaya has his plans. That is why i smelled a rat when he latently invite President Jawara . He can lie and stage a foiled coup attempt and put all against him in jail. Or even worse. No one could say with any certainty he does not have the heart to do such.

Many people that i talk to in the Gambia will very muchlik see an alliance with all the Gambians greatest minds together at work. This will indeed be a historical miscalculation if the there is not enough wisedom and sacrifice on the side of the opposition leaders to command an alliance.

With that said i must say i believe strongly in your capablity and experience to make the right decision for the Gambian people. In addition the same could indeed be said about your allias in opposition.

                                      Thanks  for your sacrifices

                                                                               kalilu
