Gamsu concerned about April 10 victim Set to seek assistance Awa Ceesay the newly elected president of the Gambia Students Union (Gamsu) in a brief statement had indicated that the union would continue to solicit funds for Yusupha Mbye the only April 10 victim still in dire need of medical help. Miss Ceesay made this statement last Tuesday at the presentation of a gift Gamsu made to Yusupha's family at the R.V.H. She assured the family of the victim that Gamsu hasn't forgotten about Yusupha and that it is a priority for her union to secure funds for him so that he would undergo medical treatment abroad as soon as the medical records of the victim are made available to her. In an earlier statement, Isatou Nyang PRO for Gamsu in introducing the union's representatives said they were at the hospital to visit their colleague and express concern, sympathy for the victims of last year's student disturbances. She also mentioned her union's appreciation of the hospital management's efforts. Yusupha Mbye while on his hospital bed also showed appreciation for the gift. He however disclosed that he has not been receiving any treatment since before last Ramadan supposedly due to lack of any prescriptions. 18 year old Yusupha recounted how he sustained bullet injury in his spinal cord, which left him paradise. He was evacuated to Egypt for overseas treatment but stayed only for four months and was conditionally returned due to the expiry of payments made for his medical and accommodation bills. He however was quick to mention that though brief his treatment in Egypt improved his health condition, realizing his ability to stretch his fingers and sit upright. He also recalled that since his returned in September 2000 following his release, he was never visited by any government worker officially until last April 9th 2001 when President Jammeh paid him a visit, in the presence of the chief executive of the hospital. The president had promised that he (Yusupha) would be taken for overseas treatment but according to him he could recall the chief executive contacting his parents only once. He however appreciates the efforts of the family whom he believed have been doing all they could to get him well again. Laity Mbye a brother of Yusupha in a statement indicate that they have been in constant contact with the Department of Health over his brother's condition. He narrated that in the department of health told him that his brother was supposed to be treated by a Scottish doctor who is currently on leave. He still believe that immediately after the doctor resumes work, his brother would be evacuated for oversea treatment. He said he was being reassured by Gamsu's concern for his brother and all students affected. He also disclosed that currently all medical records of his brother are with the health department. Other speaker at the occasion included Babucarr Ngum who expressed similar delight. He promised to make the medical records of the victim available to the union as requested. The gift, which included two bags of rice, half bag of sugar and a carton of milk, was received by Laity Mbye on behalf of the victim's family. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html You may also send subscription requests to [log in to unmask] if you have problems accessing the web interface and remember to write your full name and e-mail address. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
