An irate-sounding President Jammeh took a brutal swipe at Buba Baldeh, the APRC deputy national mobiliser, saying he was in the forefront of those who led dubious lives in the days of the PPP leadership. Mr. Baldeh was a minister before the 1994 coup, which toppled the PPP.

In a particularly blunt speech to the people of Basse, the president said Mr. Baldeh was in the company of PPP eggheads who led questionable lifestyles, which upped prostitution, undermined Islam and brought in a pattern of reckless plunder of the nation's meager resources, while the generality of Gambians were mired in acute poverty.

The president said because of the extra-marital activities undertaken by PPP government functionaries, there were a lot of divorce cases in Basse. "They contributed nothing but prostitution and the destruction of Islam," he charged.

"Your own Buba Baldeh, O.J, and M.C Cham were in the forefront. When they wanted to do some of their dubious things, they will call Jamil Cham to join the then President Dauda Jawara on his meet-the-people-tour," Jammeh remarked.

According to President Jammeh, when he was in charge of State House security guards from 1990 to 1994 he was usually asked to order his men to raid the Sambang, a resident for prostitutes, so as to get women for the PPP politicians while on their provincial tours.

President Jammeh said the APRC would never be like the PPP government in their immoral conduct. "I want to assure you that the development of Basse is high on my government's agenda and the sky is the limit" he said.

Commenting on Assan Musa Camara chairman of the opposition coalition and former minister in the Jawara government, President Jammeh explained that "during Christmas Musa is a Christian and when Tobaski comes Musa becomes a Muslim." President Jammeh said such a person should not be trusted with the important job of running a government.
