Habib, I doubt very much that the Saudi peace proposal will go anywhere.

The Saudis will present their peace plan at the Arab summit
Arafat must be there for the Saudis to present it to all concerned
It is doubtful that Israeli will relax Arafat's house arrest
Ariel Sharon is not very serious about peace
Ariel Sharon needs the circle of violence to continue to hold on to power
The violence began when Sharon visited the temple mount
That visit undermined Barak's efforts and became his eventual downfall
Sharon and his henchmen are using the U.S. efforts in Afghanistan to justify their actions on the ground

The U.S. roll is very one sided, the Bush administration have avoided Arafat since they came to power, Bush would not even shake Arafat's hand at the U.N. nor acknowledge his presence. To me the U.S. is not an honest broker and should not help broker any peace deals that sort to subjugate the Palestinians further. Peace is possible but not in very near future.
