Now here is someone speaking from experience Culled from Independent Presidential Election Marred By Frauds Speaking to journalists at a press conference held yesterday at the UDP Headquarters in Banjul, the party leader Ousainou Darboe declared that the last presidential election was marred by under hand frauds. He explained that these frauds were unknown to political parties and other stakeholders. Chief among them, he said, were the decision of the IEC to allow people whose names did not feature in the register to vote; the arrest and intimidation of UDP supporters as well as the killing of a UDP supporter at Tallinding. “Although this incident was the subject of a broadcast by the BBC radio interview with a British MP who was one of the monitors, the world failed to realise the negative impact it had on voters, especially UDP supporters”, said the former Coalition flag bearer. He also catalogued 16 villages in the Senegalese region of Casamance and Dakar as the locations for the alleged registration of non-Gambians. The villages, he named, were Fony Sumbunda, Kamoya, Badji Kunda, Balandor, Mankere, Jolatung, Foni Bona, Marakesh-Jolakunda, Gui-Kun, Major, Kanial Jolakunda, Yabo Kunda, Tabale, Sudan, Wafulu and Wonko. According to Darboe, a registration exercise for people of Casamance origin also took place in Arafat Grand Yoff in Dakar. He added the people who coordinated it were Jerreh Bojang, a native of Manduar resident in Dakar, Amoro Badjie and Fatou Badjie. The UDP leader went on to say that they also discovered cases of double registration for which the commission failed to take action. He also charged that registrations were also conducted for civilians at Fajara Barracks and at the Sanatorium. Mr. Darboe did not leave out what he called the “massive voter transfers for which the IEC failed to give any genuine explanation”. Responding to a question about their participation or otherwise in the local government elections, Darboe intimated that the matter would be determined by the party and not him(darboe) Darboe revealed that the party had been denied permits by the Inspector General of Police on two occasions, but vowed that come Sunday UDP will hold a rally in Brikama, with permit or without permit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html To contact the List Management, please send an e-mail to: [log in to unmask] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
