Culled from the BBC ==================================================== As usual we can rely on Galloway!! he won't be silenced by anyone. He takes "president" Blair to task on the actions ranging from the bombings in Iraq to the actions in Afghanistan. This guy once rode in a London Bus for weeks all the way to Baghdad to deliver food and medicine to the Iraqis and to show them that not everyone is Britain is oblivious to their pain. They have tried using blackmail to silence him. The last time the Commons debate had to be suspended for he was called a Saddam apologist, and knowing the Scottish temper , he wasn't going to stand for it. he put Ben Bradshaw( a junior minister) in his proper place. Good day Manneh =========================================================== Thursday, 4 April, 2002, 06:49 GMT 07:49 UK Labour's George Galloway has renewed his call for people living in Scotland to boycott goods from Israel in response to violence in the Middle East. The Glasgow Kelvin MP said shoppers should be checking the origin of their groceries and taking a stand. Mr Galloway will also lead a lobby to Number 10 Downing Street, on Thursday, to demand that Britain ends its arms sales to Israel. UK Government ministers have come under pressure over Britain's continued trade with Israel as its military forces extend operations into Palestinian territory. On Wednesday, when the Westminster Parliament was recalled to pay tribute to the Queen Mother, a number of MPs called for a debate on the Middle East crisis. However, they were unsuccessful and must now wait until parliament reconvenes next week. Already 71 MPs have signed a Commons motion calling for a suspension of trade with Israel. 'Check the label' Against that background Mr Galloway has renewed his plea to the Scottish public to boycott goods and fresh produce which have an Israeli stamp of origin on them. He said the public should be on the lookout for products like some oranges, avocados and vegetables. Mr Galloway's call comes as Egypt is suspending contacts with Israel apart from diplomatic channels which could help the Palestinians. Egyptian Information Minister Safwat el-Sherif said Egypt would restrict ties with Israel to those that "served the Palestinian cause". Egypt and Jordan are the only two Arab states which have full diplomatic ties with Israel. An Israeli official dismissed Egypt's decision as a symbolic gesture. He said relations between the two countries were not extensive and that the Egyptian move would not deflect Israel from what he called its war on terror. Egypt recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv, leaving only a charge d'affaires, more than a year ago to protest at the violence that erupted in September 2000. Egyptians have been staging mass protests for days to apply pressure on their government ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html To contact the List Management, please send an e-mail to: [log in to unmask] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
