Banjul to host Queen of Africa beauty contest

THE Queen of Africa Beauty Contest scheduled to take place in The Gambia on June 15, is being organized by FABECS Promotion, and women from 14 African countries are expected to participate.

The Vice President and Secretary of State for Women's Affairs, Isatou Njie-Saidy, launched the event yesterday at a ceremony held in her office in Banjul.

She commended the idea since it will, as she put it, put The Gambia on the world map, serve as an income-generating activity, promote the entertainment industry, as well as promote textiles. She hoped the pageant will be a success.

The Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture, Yankuba Touray, said his department welcomes such promotional events, and pledged its support since they complement efforts geared towards promoting tourism and the culture industry.

Touray said his department will in future give Miss Gambia the chance to attend international trade fairs, and other promotional packages so that the nation's beauty queen serves as a good ambassador for The Gambia.

Fatima Jabbie the chairperson of FABECS Promotion spoke of her organisation's achievements, and that there will be prizes including cash and a return air ticket to London.

The secretaries of state for Education, Justice and Fisheries attended the ceremony.
