Two Months After Assuming Office Mayors, Councilors Not Paid The Independent (Banjul) NEWS August 2, 2002 Posted to the web August 2, 2002 By Lamin M. Dibba Banjul Eight Mayors, 114 Councilors and six chairpersons who were sworn-in two months ago are yet to receive their salaries according to reports reaching The Independent. Mayors and Councilors who spoke to The Independent under condition of anonymity confirmed that since they assumed office they have not been paid their monthly salaries they are entitled to as public officials. 'Some of us resigned from other walks of life to take up such a position. But we are with very big families and the situation as at now shows that we have got from the frying pan into the fire' said a far from satisfied councilor. A Chairperson said according to the local government the Secretary of State shall by regulation determine allowances and any other benefits, which shall be paid by a council to its members. A vice chairman said 'we are in limbo on when we will start receiving salaries. We humbly ask the Secretary of State for Local Government to do everything possible to assist us table our mode of payment with the institution responsible. We are not expecting a big package but we are still right to expect something at the end of the day. Let it not be confused with our readiness to render selfless service to our dear motherland.'
