Gassa,

I think we need to separate Rhetoric from Reality. Jabou has clearly stated it to you that these Aids are no cause for jubilation but sadness to the poor people at home. With the abuse of people’s rights and all kinds of bills parading in the country, these aid have less impact in the present economic crisis in the country. More so, will it even get there?

One thing you tend to trash or forget or shall I say you don’t understand is the fact that successful long-term development is a complex process that depends on many factors. The two most important things which you seem to negate in your argument are:  the quality of governance and economic policies.

Compared with those two factors, foreign aid is much less important in determining whether a country will achieve long-term economic growth and development. So, for us to even jubilate that more aid is coming to Gambia shows how ignorant we are on its implications.  In a country like the Gambian foreign aid is undermining development because of the government’s unwilliness to make necessary political and economic reforms of which you are well aware.

We are talking about structures in place, how many loans and aids have gotten home since Jammeh’s take over? What happen to them to all? Why are we now suffering? Don’t tell me that this is part of developing. We have to suffer before enjoying, I bet if this is your theory or the AFPRC’s theory. They must be the most ignorant analysist I have even seen. Because by the time we reach to enjoying there won’t be anyone left in the Gambia.

The Government always pursues policies that damage the economy simply because those policies benefit them and others with political and economic power.  Government are increasing waste through uncompetitive contracting that favors the politically well connected rather than the most innovative or efficient.

Governmental institutions which you tend to negate in your arguments are key to development. Institutions like the laws, regulations, and other rules that foster economic activity; and formal organizations such as a central bank.

This is taking me back to the days of Marcos in Philippines. Foreign aid provided to the Philippines under Marcos has actually hurt its development by reinforcing his economic mismanagement and corruption. Between 1966 and 1986, the international community gave or lent approximately $33 billion in 1997 dollars to the Philippines, most of which was economic assistance. But per capita GNP averaged only 0.8 percent growth during those years. Moreover, poverty increased, and rural and urban wages declined dramatically. The Philippines' external debt as a percentage of GNP grew from 13 percent in the mid-1960s to 93 percent in 1986. And calculations of capital leaving the Philippines between 1962 and 1986 totalled over $19 billion, not including an adjustment for lost interest. Before being driven from power, Marcos, his family, and close associates "recycled" a substantial amount of the Philippines' external borrowing by sending or taking it out of the country.   See: Boyce, The Philippines, pp. 279, 295, 297. Some estimates put the amount in the billions of dollars”

Jammeh and his government are no different to that of MARCOS.

By the way I am glad to said Amen to Jabou’s hope and desire because that is the thing the AFPRC’s government reduced the people.

The Struggle Continues!!!!
