Hon Suku Singhateh, National Assembly member for Lower Baddibu, returned
home on Saturday from a business trip in Niger.

In a press release issued yesterday, Hon Singhateh expressed shock and
dismay on reports of his arrest in Niger. Below we reproduce the full text
of the release: "I wish to announce my return to The Gambia on Saturday
October 19, 2002 and I am shocked and dismayed to read in the local press
that I was "in police custody" in Niger.

"The fact of the matter is that the Niger authorities raided a hotel in
which I was staying with some other guests staying in the same hotel. I am
a holder of a service passport and the Niger authorities contacted Interpol
to verify my credentials. This was done and I was released immediately with
an apology by the Niger authorities.

I will hold a press conference in the next few days to which the local
press will be invited."
