Joe , Ams et al,

On the beggars issue that you have touched upon so far, I want to add my observation.

There are beggars in most countries I have visited . Hustlers may be not . The only place in the world that I did not see any beggars is Singapore where they go to jail if they approach anyone in public even in front of churches or mosques . Thr govt provides help to all the needy through the social services ministry and food is didtributed to the hungry. Homeless I have not seen there either . Low cost housing is provided for them and they are assiged jobs ( even manual labor) to help them pay for the accomodation. If one is old or sick then there is a different place for them like our senior citizens homes except the govt pays for it. There is no free ride however . If you have family or property the govt gets a cut from them too to cover their expenses.

I am not saying Gambia can do the same but we have to look at some rich that there are panhandlers , beggars and hustlers like our own USA where you see them at bus stops and the metros etc

Regardless ,I am surprised at the alarming rate mentioned . The Gambia I left had very few beggars and they were many from Senegal and usually blind ones.

May God help us all and save us from this fitnah

Habib
