From http://www.observer.gm News Science Tech centre opened at College By Marcel Mendy Jan 21, 2004, 11:22 The Gambia National Commission for Unesco in collaboration with The Gambia College on January 13 launched a Mathematics, Science and Technology Centre at the College campus. Speaking at the ceremony, Musa Sowe, the director of the Centre said science and technology are fundamental pillars in the socio-economic development of any society. “I am hopeful that youths will take advantage of this centre and participate fully in all programmes it offers. This centre will help to equip students with the science and technology skills to participate in national development,” said Mr Sowe. He thanked the government and Unesco for their “immense contributions” in making the centre a reality. Jenung Manneh, the principal of Gambia College said that the institution has been faced with demands from both public and private sectors to provide skilled manpower in the areas of technology, mathematics and basic science education. “We are convinced that the development of maths, science and technology are essential tools that would form the basis to generate the human and intellectual resources needed to deliver and strengthen basic education services,” he said. Sirreh Jallow, the permanent secretary DoSE said, “it is a cardinal aim of the government to promote and sustain science and technology education in the school system.
