Joe,

I must say I am particularly saddened that my colleagues at The Independent accepted anything at all from Jammeh. It is unfortunate that they went ahead with this disastrous and compromising action without any consultations. The only thing The Independent should accept from Jammeh is an unconditional and total surrender of the rights of the Gambian nation that he has appropriated. Since I am away from home, I will do what I can to see that the integrity and reputation we fought so hard to build is not shattered overnight by this disastrous lapse in judgment. In any case, as the Founder editor and CEO of The Independent, I am totally and absolutely dissociating my self from this compromising action by the paper's management on the ground. I was not consulted and only knew about this horrible blunder after the fact. Foroyaa did the right thing to fling this so-called gift back in Jammeh's face. Also, I would entreat us to recognize that lapses of judgement do occur and that there is always the possibility of error and correction. So let's keep the faith and not read too much into this first error. Thanks.

Baba
