Highly placed sources have confirmed the arrest of sacked army chief of staff LT.Colonel Vincent Jatta by the National Intelligence Agency the (NIA) . Former Army chief of staff Jatta , is reportedly being questioned by the NIA and Military intellegence officers over issues relating to state security, authoritative sources intimated. Mr.Jatta who recently replaces sacked Army chief of staff Colonel Baboucarr Jatta, was arrested by State security agents amids reports that he wanted to quit the army following the brutal murder of Deyda Hydara. Jatta was said to have lamented about the lapse of security in tiny West African country. According to sources form Banjul, his family are apparently worried about Jatta's safety. Vincent Jatta, a career infantry soldier was said to have been abducted by his captives, who are reportedly forcing statements on him. "There are attempts to frame Vincent and other soldiers close to him. He is not deported. Deported for what? He is a Gambian. I can confirm to you that Vincent is being held by the NIA and soon gambians will know why he is detained." said a source. Authorities in Banjul, declined to make any public statement on Jatta's arrest. His arrest came in the wake of growing insecurity in The Gambia. Armed men have been on rampage, killing and terrorising those perceived to be critical of the Jammeh dictatorship. The government has always denied responsibility for these atrocities. But observers and citizens alike believed that the government must be a party to what they described as these "cowardly attacks." Since the toppling of the democratically elected government of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, by former army lieutenant Yahya Jammeh in July of 1994, the current government had been at logger head with the press and the opposition. Jammeh had on many occasions declared his intention to bury his perceived critics "six feet deep". Servants of his government violate citizens rights with impunity. He also interfered with the running of the judiciary. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
