The debate surrounding globalization has inspired a number of reforms at the macro level, but are they working? What are the implications of globalization for developing countries? What are some alternatives to the current system of intellectual property rights? What reforms can be made to international institutions, including the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund, to make them more effective, transparent, and responsive? The World Affairs Council presents Joseph Stiglitz, acclaimed author and Nobel Prize-winning economist, at an evening lecture in Seattle on October 16, 2006 where he will address how globalization can reach its full potential and benefit people around the world. About the Speaker Joseph Stiglitz is uniquely qualified to address these issues. As a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) from 1993-95 during the Clinton administration, Stiglitz served as CEA chairman from 1995-97. He then became Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank from 1997-2000. In 2001, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his analyses of markets with asymmetric information. In addition to his extensive career in the field of economics, Joseph Stiglitz is also recognized as a leading economic educator and prolific author. His most famous work, Globalization and Its Discontents, has been translated into 35 languages and has sold more than one million copies worldwide. He currently lectures at Columbia University in New York and chairs the university's Committee on Global Thought. Stiglitz’s presentation will be followed by a brief Q&A session. His most recent book, Making Globalization Work, will be available for purchase following the event. **************************************************************** Director Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology Box 353412 University of Washington Seattle, WA 98195-3412 Office: (206) 685-3402 Dept Office: (206) 616-7743 Fax: (206) 616-8135 http://csde.washington.edu/ [log in to unmask] http://faculty.washington.edu/morrism/ ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://listserv.icors.org/archives/gambia-l.html To Search in the Gambia-L archives, go to: http://listserv.icors.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ICORS.EXE?S1=gambia-l To contact the List Management, please send an e-mail to: [log in to unmask] ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
