Dr. Jaiteh, I echo your sentiments. Not only is Dakar becoming Africa's gateway to international destinations, Bamako is well on its way to becoming a regional west African hub. These two synergies stand the subregion in good stead in the areas of transportation, communication, and sustainable development. I will also add to your hope that Senegal and Mali are not becoming preferred destinations in a vacuum. They are garnering the confidence of the international community to warrant these partnerships. Although they have incidents of undemocratic governance, their diligence in the accrual of systemic freedoms, transparency, and good governance is not going unnoticed. The Gambia is a failed state and hinders decentralisation of governance and development for the Dakar government. I hope folks in The Gambia are not distracted from the big picture. With major airliners and sea liners heading to Dakar, Banjul will soon be Georgetown. Instead of spending millions of dalasi in propping Yundum Airport, the government should start looking into a regional airport at Basse and possibly an inland seaport around Jarra. The Basse airport will be defacto regional hub linking Dakar and eastern Senegambia and eastern Guinea / Guinea Bissau. The trans-Gambia road/bridge tied into open border policy will help with the integration. The Gambia cannot afford to be surrounded by a confident, self-reliant Senegal.
