Interesting Malanding. words convey powerful meaning. the sad thing for us is, these interesting aspects of our society are neglected. I for one can only assume that to be due to poverty and lack of critical thinking. People rather wish to concentrate on what makes them successful without much efforts. --- On Fri, 31/10/08, Malanding Jaiteh <[log in to unmask]> wrote: From: Malanding Jaiteh <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Whats in a word? Some say " butut" is the small one in Wolof. But is Dalasi Mandinka? If so what does it mean? Is it from "daa la sio" Mandinka for the full dimension (?) or is borrowed from Dollars - "Dallas"(?) - "Dalasi" a currency in circulation in the area until the middle of the 19th Century? Any students of history out there?
