Ostensibly, the AU is protesting unconstitutional governance represented by military rule. I'd say unconstitutional governance is what obtains in many AU member states, even though their heads are supposedly civilians. The concept of unconstitutionality should also be legitimately applied to civilian regimes that have no respect for constitutional provisions, human rights and the rule of law, or that change their constitutions at will to accomodate the greedy wishes of their civilian despots. If the current military regime in Guinea deserves suspension, so does Zimbabwe, Gambia, Togo and all those other countries where constitutions are being prostituted to the highest bidder. As things stand, many African heads of state are trembling on their seats for fear of a coup in their countries. It is amazing how the international community sits quietly by watching despots create conditions for military coups and other cvil crises and then suddenly start making threatening noises when they happen. Militray rule certainly = unconstitutional rule. But is civilian rule = constitutional rule? The hypocrisy of international politics is simply sickening. Thanks for sharing Haruna.

The African Union suspends La Guinea after the military imposed itself on Conakry.

(Afp)
