I agree entirely with your perspective of what "democracy" should entail, and yes I know your view on the "matters at stake". I also visit GON, and all other Gambia-dedicated on-line media outlets, including the other side of the story, i.e., The Daily Observer, several times a day, for the ULTIMATE breaking news.

As it implicates expression, even if at a lower level of importance, I am keenly following the Pap Saine story. On the face of the story, your condemnation of Saine's torment appears to be in order.

For important, yet smaller outlets like GON, The Point, and other Gambian media houses, what is your understanding of the relation between the Editor/Owner, and an "editorial"?

Does the editorial represent the views of the Editor/Owner, or is it separate from the Editor/Owner? I appreciate that ownership and editorial control are separate in some outlets, but are merged in others.

If GON routinely editorialises on the positive aspects of "democracy" in The Gambia, is it fair to assume that position as representing YJ's view considering the size of the paper, and YJ's close involvement in running it?

Hi LJD,
You very well know where I stand on these matters at stake. Picturally, imagine a blue flying kite. If ever one asks you whether you are seeing a blue or white kite, then that signals a problem right there, and lacking the blue color itself because the flying kite should be blue.
I believe in democracy within standards; i.e. to say as Lincoln once puts it:
"Of the people; by the people and for the people."
"Of the people," to mean power belongs to the people.
"By the people," to mean the Gambian populace own the constitution in its entirity; they entrusted power to the rulers of the land and at will.
"For the people." to mean that the government should be the servant of the people. They should represent the plight and wishes of the populace.
Going by these standards, it is clear that democracy is far from being it, not to talk of a vibrant democracy…which to a lay man like me would just mean a "healthy democracy," instead it is "sick democracy" under a "criminal ruler." The constitution is prostituted; the citizenry oppressed; voices (the politicians, the press and activists) all silenced; the judiciary corrupted and due process of law not observed. Herein, we are looking at Jammeh and his demons, or call it the demonic administration. Apparently, Jammeh shows more respect to the demons than to Gambian citizens. If I am right in my analysis, then we are further from being a "vibrant democracy."

Please update yourself on the Pap Saine's palaver. I am sure you asked the above to pass something onto me. I truly look forward to it. You might be right that I am expecting too much from these criminal rulers. Back to you (SIC.)
Best of regards always,
Yj

What are your thoughts on Gambian "democracy"?

Would you say we have a vibrant democracy in The Gambia?

I condemn his arrest.

Just last week, Jammeh was heard saying "criticise me" and that is fertilizer. This once again proves jammeh's hypocrisy. The sooner that Gambians prepare themselves for the final battle that will boot the punk out, the better life shapes.
