The Gambian Born Miami University Professor, Dr. Abdoulie Saine launched his new book, The Paradox of Third - Wave Democratization in Africa: The Gambia under AFPRC-APRC Rule, 1994 – 2008, at Brown University, Rhode Island, and the Gambian Society hall in New York City respectively.

Following the successful launching ceremony at Brown University’s book store on Friday, February 20, 2009, Professor Abdoulie Saine, a writer, rights activist, philanthropist and policy analyst, on Sunday, February 23, 2008, shuttled to New York City, where the book was officially introduced to Gambians of all walks of life at the famous Gambia Society Hall in the Bronx.

Present at the occasion was Dr. Nancy Wright, Professor of Political Science, Long Island University; Ms. Paula Saine, Mr. Bakary Sawaneh, Chairman of the Gambia Organization; Mr. Pa Drammeh, Executive Member, Gambia Society; Mr. Manding Darboe, Gambian Scholar and political activist; Mr. Saikou Mballow, Chairman of the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy in the Gambia (New York Chapter); Mr. Pa Saikou Kujabi, Executive Secretary, Gambia Society; Mr. Femi Peters, Campaign Manager United Democratic Party (UDP), and members of the Gambian Media.

Following the introductory remarks by Mr. Pa Saikou Kujabi, Professor Nancy Wright described Professors Saine’s book launch as timely. She attributed this to “the emphasis on the study of small states as an important theme of International Relations”.

On their part, both Mr. Bakary Sawaneh and Mr. Manding Darboe characterized the genius of Professor Saine as “Gambia’s Sheikh Anta Diop,” – a contemporary Senegalese scholar famous for his rich literature and scholastic narratives. Mr. Darboe further described him as a “curious individual” whose efforts have touched the Gambian political landscape.

Speaking after his introduction by the moderator, Dr. Saine not only thanked the community and his wife, but described the book as a “culmination of 15 years of work” on The Gambia, from libraries and academic journal articles. Precise with less jargons and theories, the book is a profoundly based on Gambian realities from the July, 22nd 1994 military coup to the year 2008. The book, according to Dr. Saine, is aimed at bringing to light the realities of a broken and changing Gambia.

In his marathon speech, Professor Saine gave an analytical exposition of the book as providing not only a historical background to the country, the Jawara administration and the causes of the coup, but also the economy; theoretical analysis of the military coup; the implications for the future of the Gambia and Africa; a political economy analysis, and how the government under the armed forces shaped the institutions of our beloved nation.

The book is accordingly divided into three sections: Historical and Narrative (What happened in Gambia, providing Data), Analysis (Theoretical and Empirical), Summary and Prescriptive (Policy Recommendations).

In his concluding remarks Dr. Saine emphasized his contention that a more prosperous Gambia is viable when farmers and women are supported, educational institutions strengthened, enough food and medical facilities provided. He asserted that current policies in the tiny West African nation are an embarrassment to all Gambians, and is confident that the tiny the Gambia could be transformed into a better nation for the interest of its citizens.

Professor Saine said the book has been dedicated to students killed during the April 10th and 11th , 2001 student demonstrations, murdered Journalists Omar Barrow and Deyda Hydara, the late Modou Musa Secka, Musa Sey, Baboucarr Gaye and all Gambian kids.

Efforts by the Gambia’s founding fathers such as Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, Mr. Foster, Edward Francis Small were also echoed as one that has shaped the Gambia from the shackles of colonialism, thus laying the foundation for the tiny West African nation to become a sovereign nation of modern times.

The book is therefore a must read for all Gambians and friends of the Gambia; especially the younger generation. This is so because the book does not only bring to light what happened in our beloved country, but also provides compelling solutions on how to confront the nation's challenges in the changing world of the 21st century.

Professor Saine was born in Kaur, The Gambia. He attended Armitage High School ,Yundum Teachers College, The Gambia. Dr.Saine completed his undergraduate Degree at the University of Denver in 1975, an M.A from the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs,Carleton University in 1979, an M.A from the University of Denver,1980, and a Ph.d in 1989 from Denver University's Graduate School of International Studies.
