National Disaster Management Council Instituted

Government of the Gambia has on Friday instituted a National Disaster Management Council at a ceremony held in State House, Banjul. (institutionalization of Gambia’s first agency for Disaster Response follows enactment of National Disaster Management Act by the National assembly in 2008.

 

This nationwide disaster council comprised fourteen members and is chaired by Vice President Ajaratou Isatou Njie-Saidy .In his inaugural statements, President Jammeh urged the new council to be proactive and not just about managing disasters but to create public awareness on disaster prevention, reduction and response.

 

The UN Resident Coordinator [name] said the setting up of this council represents a milestone in the effective management of disaster and environment.
