Lamin,

Your assessment if Clarence Thomas is right on the money. My opinion of him is that he is a confused man period.

Times are a' changing and until Barack Obama was elected President, a whole lot of people believed that a black man winning the office was a long shot or an impossibility, so we hope that President Obama will break down that false barrier.

As for a unified opposition, that is what all Gambians, both in and outside the Gambia want to see happen, so I hope that the in terest of the people will over-ride personal interests for once this time around. There is no question that each and every Gambian knows that is the only way we will get the Jammeh yoke of oppression off our backs.

Jabou

I thank you for that excellent explanation of the operational dynamics of the Obama political machine. What you just highlighted can be put into effective use in 2011, provided we have a united opposition front against the Sheikh. I am confident the Diaspora has the capacity to offer not only funds, but more crucially, formidable technical support to our colleagues on the ground. All we lack is the green light from party leaders in the form of a united front.
You are right that Sotoma yor "will make a great Justice", and as to the Hispanics getting "representation on the court", it was really only a question of time. Barring a major scandal, she is as good as confirmed.

On your hope of a "Black woman nominee", I can only hope with you. With a relatively young Justice in Clarence Thomas wasting the Black voice on the Court, I am not sure that the demographic calculus can justify another Black nominee for some time. Until Thurgood Marshall came along, the Court was lily white, and no two blacks serve on that citadel of Americana at the same time. Nevertheless, a woman is a greater possibility than another man so long as Justice Thomas stays to further undermine the affirmative action that provided him great educational and employment opportunities before ascending the Court.

With the fragility of life as a backdrop to human existence, you might as well think of your lines for lobbying the First Lady should another vacancy come up on Obama's watch.

LJD,

The Obama White House, like their campaign, are well organized and know how to keep their supporters in the loop. They never ceased sending out emails to their list of supporters just because they were in the White House. They constantly send out emails to the list of supporters every time a major decidion is undertaken by the Whilte house and they also constantly=2 0send out emails to solicit imput from supporters on impending decisions. In fact, they sent out an email yesterday  inviting supporters to sign up for a conference call with Barack today at 12.45PM time or thereabouts during which he would entertain questions from participants. All you had to do was sign up to participate and send them your telephone number and they would call you and hook you up to the conf. call when time arrived.  I would have loved to sign up except I had a previous engagement around the same time today.
I was rooting for Sotomayor and was elated that she was the one nominated by the President. I t hink she will make a great Justice and besides, it is about time that the Hispanics got representation on the court. Like you, I hope he gets teh=2 0opportunity to select two more before he leaves office and would love to see a Black woman nominee.
Jabou

ATT

A great choice for America's judicial pantheon of nine, the custodians of "equal justice under the law", and just as well. When the Executive, and the20Legislative arms shackled the Constitution, as they occasionally do, it is the Supreme Court, as the final arbiter of what US federalism entails, that usually steps in with a reminder of America's "true creed". This is not to suggest the Court is without blemish, as evidenced by two shameful and constitutionally perverse decisions, Dred Scott v Sandford, (1857), and Plessy v Ferguson (1896). The former was legislatively rectified by the 14th Amendment (1868), and the latter was judicially corrected by a differently constituted Supreme Court in Brown v Board of Education (1954).

In light of its critical significance, a Supreme Court nomination is of truly great moment. I hope Obama has opportunities to nominate at least20two other replacements for conservative justices so as to tilt the ideological composition of the Court. Unlikely in 1st term, but hoping does not hurt. Sotomayor is a potential replacement for a liberal jurist, and this still leaves the Court with a 4-4 ideological tie, with Kennedy still the swing Justice.

Anyway, how did you manage this special notification from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

Haruna --

I am proud to announce my20nominee for the next Justice of the United States Supreme Court: Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

This decision affects us all -- and so it must involve us all. I've recorded a special message to personally introduce Judge Sotomayor and explain why I'm so confident she will make an excellent Justice.

Please watch the video, and then pass this note on to friends and family to include them in this historic moment.

Watch a special message from the President

Judge Sotomay or has lived the America Dream. Born and raised in a South Bronx housing project, she distinguished herself in academia and then as a hard-charging New York District Attorney.

Judge Sotomayor has gone on to earn bipartisan acclaim as one of America's finest legal minds. As a Supreme Court Justice, she would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any Justice in 100 years. Judge Sotomayor would show fidelity to our Constitution and draw on a common-sense understanding of how the law affects our day-to-day lives.

A nomination for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land is one of the most important decisions a President can make. And the discussions that follow will be among the most important we have as a nation. You can begin the conversation today by watching this special message and then passing it on:

Thank you,

President Barack Obama
