Galleh,
Thanx for the update. An invaluable service to inform and prepare the people that we may focus our objections, disdain, and joys more effectively. Haruna.

Subject: Update on Case of Persecuted Journalists

Dear All,

GPU-USA received the following update on the case of the Gambian journalists who are been unjustly persecuted by the Jammeh regime. We continue to condem the cavalier manner in which the lame judicial sytsme in The Gambia is handling this case, as callous mercenary judges and mediocre secret police operatives dance to the bullying tunes of Jammeh's malicious despotism.

Baba

Below is the update:

This is an update on the situation of the seven Gambian journalists who are being prosecuted by the government of The Gambia on various charges of seditious publication and criminal defamation.

The seven, Ms Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, Bai Emil Touray and Pa Modou Faal of the Gambia Press Union executive, Pap Saine and Ebrima Sawaneh of The Point newspaper and Sam Sarr and Abubacar Saidykhan of Foroyaa newspaper, who appeared before Justice Joseph Wowo of the Gambia High Court last Wednesday 8th July, had their lawyers object to all the five charges as ‘invalid’ and ‘defective’, and the matter was adjoined to Monday for the judge to make a ruling.

However, when the seven appeared in court Monday, the judge, instead of ruling on the objections to the charges that were raised by the defence lawyers, urged that they should take their plea and the case should continue. After all seven pleaded not guilty to all the charges, the case was taken to the judge’s chambers where the public were not allowed in, in order to hear evidence in-camera from a state witness, apparently an agent of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

The case was later adjourned to 20th July for continuation of the hearing in open court, and all seven had their bail extended.

President - Gambia Press Union
