Thanx Galleh for the update. I commend Sam Sarr for refusing to be railroaded in private. Haruna.

Subject: Update on Gambia Seven

Hi All,

Below is an update received by GPU-USA today on the case of the seven Gambian journalists.

Baba

This is an update on the situation of the seven Gambian journalists who are being prosecuted by the government of The Gambia on various charges of seditious publication and criminal defamation.

The seven; Ms Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, Bai Emil Touray and Pa Modou Faal of the Gambia Press Union executive, Pap Saine and Ebrima Sawaneh of The Point newspaper and Sam Sarr and Abubacar Saidykhan of Foroyaa newspaper, appeared before Justice Joseph Wowo of the Gambia High Court today (Monday, 20 July) for continuation of their trial.

However, the case once again continued in chambers for the state witness from the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to give evidence in-camera. Therefore, apart from the accused and their lawyers, no member of the public was allowed to attend.

In another development, one of the defendants, Sam Sarr, who is representing himself, filed an appeal to the Gambia Court of Appeal asking for a ruling on their objections to the charges as being ‘invalid’ and ‘defective’, which the presiding judge had never made a ruling on. He therefore asked the Court of Appeal to throw away20the charges as being defective.

Sam Sarr also appealed to the Court of Appeal to compel the High Court to hold the trial in public instead of in chambers. The seven had their bail extended and they are scheduled to reappear in court tomorrow.

President - Gambia Press Union
