GPU-USA Press Release
July 20, 2009

TO THE ORGANIZERS OF THE GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION ON GAMBIA

The Gambia Press Union, United States Branch (GPU-USA) wishes to declare its total support for and solidarity with Amnesty International, the UK National Union of Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists, GPU-Gambia, and all members of the Gambian Media Fraternity on the occasion of the Global Day of Action against the Gambia Government. We are fully behind the actions being taken across the world on July 21 and 22 in demonstrating our disgust at the continued and unrelenting harassment of Gambian journalists, politicians, perceived critics of the Jammeh despotism, and innocent individuals.

We join the media and human rights community in calling for an end to the brutal politics of impunity being inflicted on the Gambian people by the Jammeh despotism. We call on the international community to apply maximum pressure and force Mr. Jammeh to respect the rights and dignities of all Gambians and to realize that The Gambia and Gambians are not his personal properties to deal with as he chooses.

We join the international community and all right thinking Gambians in calling on the Jammeh dictatorship to:

-         Immediately drop all bogus charges against the GPU Seven and other innocent Gambians in custody or under legal duress
-         Explain to the world what happened to journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh
-         Explain the circumstances surrounding the murder of Deyda Hydara
-         Release all persons and drop all charges against the Jambur Four and any other Gambians currently held or being persecuted in the wake of the insane witch hunts engineered by the demented Gambian president
-         Immediately cease the unjust persecution of the Gambian people

Down with Injustice! Long live The Gambia.

Signed on behalf of GPU-USA

Baba Galleh Jallow
Secretary General
