Subject: Update on GPU Case

Dear All,

The GPU-USA today received the following update on the case of the Gambian journalists being unjustly persecuted and bullied by the Jammeh dictatorship.

Baba

This is an update on the situation of the seven (now six) Gambian journalists who are being prosecuted by the government of The Gambia on various charges of seditious publication and criminal defamation.

The six; Ms Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, Bai Emil Touray and Pa Modou Faal of the Gambia Press Union executive, Pap Saine and Ebrima Sawaneh of The Point newspaper and Sam Sarr (as Abubacar Saidykhan was acquitted and discharged) of Foroyaa newspaper, appeared before Justice Emmaule Fagbenle of the Gambia High Court today (Tuesday, 28 July) for continuation of their trial.
When the seven appeared for the first time before Justice Fagbenle on Monday, the last prosecution witness concluded his testimony and the prosecution announced the conclusion of their case. The case was then adjourned for today for the defense to open thei r defense

However, when the case commenced today (Tuesday), the defense made a ‘no case to answer’ submission, which was opposed by the prosecution.

The presiding judge then decided to make a short adjournment in order to rule on the submission.
After the resumption of the case, Justice Fagbenle ruled that six of the seven had a case to answer but he acquitted and discharged Abubacarr Saidykhan of the Foroyaa newspaper.

The defense then had to open their case and one of the accused, Ebrima Sawaneh of The Point newspaper was called upon as the first defense witness. The case was then adjourned and he is supposed to continue his testimony tomorrow.
For: Ndey Tapha Sosseh,
President - Gambia Press Union
