Gambia: Jammeh threatens to deal with 'coup plotters' in Gambia
Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, has threatened to deal with anyone
attempting to topple his government.
Speaking on Gambia Radio and
Television Service on Wednesday, Jammeh said he wou ld deal ruthlessly
with individuals or groups planning any coup against him.
PANA reports that rumours of a revolution for 22 July, by an unnamed leader, had caused
serious concerns for the government which said the same leader was involved in an attempted
coup in 2006.
According to Jammeh, "the same fellow was behind all the atrocities in the country following
which I decided to sack him from the government."
On corruption, the Gambian leader admitted that there was corruption in the government, but
said he was trying his best to fight it despite its deep roots in the system.
He said, however, that body set up to fight corruption in the country, had not made any serious
impact.
On tribalism, the Gambian leader said he was disappointed with the Mandinka ethnic group who
constitute the majority of the illegal aliens in the country, addin g that the group was trying to
bring down his government.
