In the aftermath of passage of the new Family Code in Mali, religious organisations have been up in arms regarding certain "innovations". What they forget is that Malians, even though mainly muslim, are of a panoply of religions, traditions, and cultures. The administration of Mali therefore must take this into account in promulgating laws and other instruments of social development. Community and Nations are more superior social compacts than religious affiliation. There can be no true Muslim nation or christian nation. That would be oxymoronic. Therefore, I am pleased Mali muslims recognize that the best way to sanctify their Islam, is via civil negotiation within a multi-sectoral nation. I am very proud of Mahmoud Dicko. Nous ne pensons pas qu’il faut mettre le pays à feu et à sang parce qu’une loi a été promulguée. Non. Telle n’est pas notre volonté. Mais nous sommes des citoyens à part entière. We do not envisage doing what many people imagine we do. We do not think that it is necessary to set Mali to flames or drench it i n blood because a law was promulgated however disdainful the law. No. This is not our style. But we are citizens nonetheless. Nous sommes des électeurs de ce pays. Des députés que nous même avons élus ont posé des actes. Mais nous en tirons les conséquences et nous avons des dispositions à prendre ça je ne vous le cache pas. On sait maintenant à quoi s’en tenir. C’est un avertissement pour nous. Voilà ce que les élus nous ont servi, nous avons compris. Mais on ne va pas vers la violence, on ne va pas vers des casses. Nous pensons aujourd’hui que ça ne sert ni l’islam que nous prétendons défendre, ça ne sert pas aussi notre pays. We are the electors of the country. The representatives we ourselves elected have made their decisions. We suffer the consequences. Now it is our turn to make our decisions. This was an affront to us. That is what our elected officials have offered us. But we will not become violent, neither will we pillage. We understand that that does not serve Islam any value. Islam that we desire to defend. It will not also serve our nation any value. Nous sommes des gens responsables et le pays est à majorité musulmane. Si nous cassons des maisons, elles appartiennent à des musulmans ; si nous cassons des boutiques, elles appartiennent à des musulmans ; si nous cassons les édifices de l’Etat, c’est le contribuable malien qui donne son argent . Nous nous ne pouvons pas appeler à aller détruire ça ce n’est pas possible. Nous sommes dans un pays qui se dit démocratique. Nous avons beaucoup d’arme pour faire combattre, pour faire valoir, pour dire ce que nous pensons et dans un cadre de respect des lois en vigueur dans notre pays. We are responsible people and the majority of Mali is Muslim. If we destroy homes, we destroy muslim homes. If we destroy shops, they are muslim shops. When we destroy government offices and property, we destroy the property of the muslim communities. THerefore, we cannot in good conscience encourage listless rampage. We live in a democratic country. Our democracy affords us facility to seek and receive relief, to speak our mind, all in an atmosphere of respect for the rule of law that exists in our country.
