"Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) sources reported that Lamin Camara, lead counsel, filed the appeal asking the Appeal Court to overturn the High Court judgement on the grounds that the criminal charges on which his clients were tried and convicted contravenes the 1997 Gambian Constitution."

"It is particularly disturbing that the judgment was handed down by Justice Emmanuel Fagbenle, a Nigerian, whose attention was drawn to the case of Arthur Nwankwo v. The State (1985) 6 NCLR 228 wherein the Nigerian Court of Appeal had, as far back as 1983, declared sedition illegal and unconstitutional

Since the sedition law in the Criminal Codes applicable in Nigeria and The Gambia is essentially the same Justice Fagbenle ought to have dismissed the frivolous charges and acquitted the journalists. More so that The Gambian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights recognize and guarantee Freedom of Expression" The West African Bar Association.

These quotes from Lamin Camara and the West African Bar Association supports my contentions with the UDP statement. The arrest, detention, trial, conviction and sentence of the six gallant journalists are illegal under the Gambia law, African Charter, and others.
