Haruna, i will also add my voice to yours in thanking Buharry's tireless efforts in connecting us with the past.
Not all history speaks volume, and Senko business was a long, long time ago misadventure by the Wally dynasty who hailed from Kaabu. The Wallis according to oral narrations were the founding rulers of Wulli, and to this day, some Wallis in Wulli are sticking to the Soninke tradition of gulping Maja dolo and getting high in broad day light. Can you imagine that. yeah you can.
Any way, ancient kings use to take liberty, that was their past time and the infertile Mansa was no exception. Mystery and mysticism has always involve some form of contact with spirits world. But Wulli has rid it self of such Senka dun.
I did a comment on the subject back in August 2008, here is my brief take on it:

SENKO, A PRE-ISLAMIC RITUAL IN WULLI

www.suntoumana.blogspot.com
watch this video of a pre-Islamic ritual in wulli. the act is perform by a man who only his guide can identify, known in Mandingo as jobo. this person is of communal importance. he perform for the community in dispelling evil spirits. the association of jnn's are central to his powers. but the sad part is before one becomes a senko, he must sacrifice his sister to the snake, who will later die. this was a believe in pre-Islamic wulli, but since islamisation banish all such practises, the community re-enact the performance of the senko (a from of kankuran).
check it out, for non-mandinka speakers, sorry.

Buharry,

Once again thanx. This is the man (Sir Dawda Jawara) who was replaced by the accident of a human being Yahya Jammeh.

On the other clip SENKO. I never was aware of this story in Wulli. I'm sure glad they did away with it. Wonder how Uncle Sidia feels about these malignant lore? WHen I speak with him next, I'll ask him. Meanwhile Suntou what do you think? I understand to become a Senko, you would have had to have seen a Jinn (virus) who trains you to become a Senko. And you had to give your daughter to a friggin snake in the woods????????????? What.? I wonder why they never looked at the CHief's diet to figure out what impeded the efficacy of his spermatozoa. That could have helped many a man today. Now we don't have Senko and we still have men who can't have kids of their own. They don't have the luxury of marrying 100 wives to have one child. Wonder what the wife who bore him children was feeding him????? I would look into that wife for clues and answers. Strange stuff men. Thanx again Buharry. Haruna.

Subject: Documentaries: Aftermath of the 1981 Kukoi Rebellion & Senko-A Mandinka Cultural Film

Hi!
Two new videos (documentaries) have been added to the Raaki Gambian
films page. They are:

- Picking Up the Pieces - This is a documentary about the aftermath
of the Kukoi rebellion in 1981.

- Senko - This is a Mandinka cultural documentary. My Mandinka is
substandard. Maybe the Mandinka speakers can help with a proper
interpretation of the film.

The permanent links to these videos can be found at the link below.
Those who have linked to the page when the videos were temporarily
shown and replaced by others are hereby informed that the links to
these videos are now permanent. Anyone who wishes to link to the videos
is granted permission to do so. Thanks.

Thanks and have a good day.
Buharry.
