August, 2009
Dear Mr. President,
It was great shock and dismay that we learnt of the untimely passing away of the veteran Senator from Massachusetts Edward Kennedy. The entire membership of United Democratic Party of the Gambia joins me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to you and the entire American people.
With his demise, the Senate of the United States and indeed the American Nation as a whole have suffered a great loss, for he devoted his life to serving his country and championed causes that were aimed at improving the lot of the American people..
This outstanding legislator commanded the respect of colleagues irrespective of party affiliation. We shall all remember the pivotal role he played in the passage in the Senate of dozens of landmark Bills that have today changed the social fabric of the United States, ranging from health care, social welfare, women’s and minorities rights, and immigrat
ion.
With the passing away of Senator Kennedy, an important chapter in the annals of American politics has come to an end. The torch that his brothers of blessed memory lit and which he took over has been extinguished. The legendary wisdom of this” Liberal Lion of the US Senate”, this giant of US politics. is an inspiration not only to Americans but also to people all over the world particularly we in the Third World.
The United Democratic Party share with you and the American people this irreparable loss and would like to convey, through Your Excellency, our sincere sympathy to Senator Kennedy’ wife and the entire Kennedy family. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
Please accept Mr. President the assurances of our highest consideration and esteem
Ousainou ANM Darboe
Secretary General and Party Leader
