. This seminar will be delivered by Oliver McTernan

Oliver McTernan was raised in Ireland and became a Catholic Priest in London. He resigned from active ministry in the church in 2000 to focus on the work he is currently doing in a number of important areas. He has an established background in conflict resolution and interfaith relationships. He was a Visiting Fellow of the Weatherhead Centre for International Affairs at Harvard University 2000 -2003. He is a Senior Associate Fellow of the UK Defence Academy. He was responsible for initiating the first post-conflict talks between NATO and the former Yugoslav government. His latest book Violence in God’s Name explores the role of religion in an age of conflict. He broadcasts regularly on the BBC

Oliver McTernan has been closely involved with trying to get negotiations going between Israel and the Palestinians in recent years. He has visited Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on numerous occasions. He is the Co-founder and Director of Forward Thinking  (www.forwardthinking.org)

 

Seminar Theme

 

 The President of the United States, Barack Obama recently made a speech in Egypt to seek

 “a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world”. This speech dealt with a number of sources of tension including the situation between Israelis, Palestinians and the Arab world.  Oliver McTernan will conduct a seminar that will consider this situation especially in the light of the speech of President Obama. These matters should provide the basis for an invigorating, stimulating and interesting seminar.
