Pa,

I gave myself this name some years ago when I was sometime ago confronted by a drunk racist while I was working part-time in a Pakistani-owned shop at Glasgow City center, called NEWSBOX. Kejau used to be one of our customers.

This young chap who was asked out of the shop after being detected shoplifting started to haul racial abuse at me and my Pakistani colleagues in the shop. He called me nigger and black bast**d among other names right in my face and my reply to him was that " Please allow me to introduce myself to you, I am Nigger B".To which, he looked amazed. He expected me to be furious and physically threatening to him but there was I instead reaffirming to him that I was a nigger. Then I said to him and who are you? and before he could say anything more, I said to him: you are of course nothing but a racist junky bast**d. His response was for me not to call him a junky as he was not one. Really he was no junky. It was just my way of hurting his feelings as he had wanted to do to me. And then I turned it into a rhyme: Junky bast**d! junky bast**d! junky bast**d! He was in end warning me not to call him anymore  a junky and I was repeating that he really was one.
Eventually, he disappeared into the busy Glasgow night. He came back about a week later and apologised to all of us in the shop and me in particular and asked me my real name:  Bailo or Mr B. He preferred the latter and we co-existed happily and in peace since then until I left. He even introduced me to some of his pals. Thomas was his name.

So this is my tip to you: next time some racist call you with racist names, racist the temptation of doing a quid pro quo, simply label the person a junky bastard and keep laughin at him or her, the person is more likely to feel offended than you.

Btw, keep up your good work!

Original Nigger B

Please Sister G,

We are not faced with a racial or Apartheid problem; you could be a blue, yellow, purple, pink or green person and it makes no difference to how the vast majority of
the membership of this forum would react to your perspectives. I can assure you that until you starting proclaiming your whiteness to us in a previous exchange, most of us could not tell what your skin's pigmentation was, neither did we care to know and nor did it have any impact on us.

Ginny stated:

"Because frankly, I find it hypocritical for people to expect me to speak out, speak up, tell
everyone else about, give money to, etc., when we're talking about Yahya Jammeh and how bad he is, yet, members of the opposition are supposedly off limits for any kind of criticism.  Thus, I'm staying out of the topic altogether, so as to keep from offending anyone.  Or at least, I'll do my best."

Every atom of good one does one shall
reap and likewise every atom of bad that one does one shall also reap. Any non-Gambian who joins the struggle of Gambians for justice and freedom is highly welcomed but don't expect all of us to always agree with all of your views or opinions on the struggle. And also expect some of us to tell you to mind your own business. Expect no rewards or even a thank you and don't be putt off by put offs or insults. It is entirely up to you to contribute to or withhold your money from whatever Gambian cause but don't you expect at least one or two persons not to label you a hypocrite when we feel hypocriticised by you. Unrealistic!.

Ginny again said "Perhaps if I were living in The Gambia, then I'd be more qualified to
participate, but a white woman sitting in America just simply isn't
qualified to speak on this issue.  This is not my issue to solve or
make better."

In conclusion, you could be of any or no colour living everywhere on planet earth and it makes no difference to most of us.

Best wishes
Nigger B

Greetings, all,

Haruna,
well, while I may not have a good idea at all times what's
going to ruffle anyone's feathers, I can definitely say that Gambian
politics is one thing that I probably shouldn't discuss on this list.
Or any list for that matter.  Even if we're talking about Yahya
Jammeh's latest act of oppression of The Gambian people, you won't
hear anything from me, at least if I can possibly help it, because
sometimes if I hear/see something that is so agregious or angering to
me, I just simply can't help myself, and I write or say something
without thinking.

Because one can't be expected to yell and scream and rail against
Yahya Jammeh on one hand, yet be expected not to speak about, or to
only speak in certain terms of, other political leaders in The Gambia.

In short, I don't think this is, or was, my problem to solve, and it
isn't, and probably never was, my issue to get involved with in the
first place.
Even if I had good intentions, and all of that, I fear
that I may have, in the end, probably come across as arrogant,
conceited, and just another white person who thought they knew what
was good for others, even though I neither felt arrogant, conceited,
nor superior to anyone else.

All I can do is speak for and look out for myself, and for some
reason, I have come across in a way that I had not intended.  Thus,
the political situation in The Gambia, right down to the witch-hunts
and the extra-judicial detentions and killings are topics that I'm
just simply going to stay away from.  Because frankly, I find it
hypocritical for people to expect me to speak out, speak up, tell
everyone else about, give money to, etc., when we're talking about
Yahya Jammeh and how bad he is, yet, members of the opposition are
supposedly off limits for any kind of criticism.  Thus, I'm staying
out of the topic
altogether, so as to keep from offending anyone.  Or
at least, I'll do my best.

Because somewhere along the line, I've upset people, or worse, I've
gotten it all wrong.  Thus, I'm just taking myself out of this issue
altogether.

Perhaps if I were living in The Gambia, then I'd be more qualified to
participate, but a white woman sitting in America just simply isn't
qualified to speak on this issue.  This is not my issue to solve or
make better.  And that doesn't mean I don't have my opinions, I just
wont' be sharing them here, or anywhere publicly, if I can help it.
And if I remember correctly, Haruna himself has shared with me that
part of the problem I might be having, in why I anger and upset so
many on this list, is that I am a white woman (white and a woman), and
some just simply have a problem with someone like me, who is viewed as
an outsider, speaking on issues they consider to
 be their own, and
that was a good deal of the problem that I was having.  And Haruna, if
I've misquoted you, feel free to correct me, which I'm sure that you
will.  I most certainly don't want to come across as a neo-colonizer
who's just trying to tell people how they need to run their affairs.
Because if that's how I seem, I most certainly would rather just keep
silent, even if Yahya Jammeh continues killing and detaining people.

Ginny
