Mawdo Baba,

Points well noted.

From my own, just be careful that your own seemingly carefulness doesn't tantamount to censorship over peoples' choice of words, when in context the word is accurately used. I am sure that is not what you intend. I am not going to belabor on it further. Again, please excuse its usage.

Otherwise, thanks. Consider keeping the honorary executive membership as time favors you. Pa Samba Couch already noted your previous comments about the need to have the outgoing GPU in the ring.

Yero,

Thanks again for your comments. Again, I see the need to make one observation about your analysis. I wish to put it on record that I do not consider myself a fighter and do not wish to be characterized as a fighter. I told you as much yesterday and I am surprised that you persist in calling me a fighter. Please be careful of slapping labels on people. I think you do not intend any harm or offense by so charaterizing folks. That notwitstanding, it is a tricky practice to engage in. Whatever I consider myself to be, it is not a fighter. The word has a certain aggressive ring to it that I do not feel within myself. And I should know better. Just wanted to again point to this mischaracterization. No offense taken. Thanks.

Baba

Folks,

I participated in the GPU-USA elections earlier on today. The Conference call, nomination and elections were moderated by the outgoing Secretary General, Baba Galleh Jallow. My observations are that the election was very free, fair and conducted in a cordial manner. I congratulate the outgoing Secretary General Baba, who is a true “fighter.” I hope that Baldeh will learn from his predecessor who has always been on top of things. Baldeh himself is a true patriot, a fighter and a concerned individual who gets things done. I take this opportunity to congratulate Baldeh and the entire new executive.

Lastly, I was personally impressed with Haruna Darboe, Kristine Sukuna and Modou Nyang of the Foroyaa who participated. Haruna and Kristine also accepted the honorary executive membership.

Personally, I’ve had interactions with almost the entire new and outgoing executive. These are all fighters among us whose contributions towards Gambia’s liberation from the clutches of tyranny must be hailed. I would have loved to be part of the new executive myself but I turned down an offer on the basis of family, and school which is going to keep me very busy for a long period of time. Besides, if anyone wants to join Gainako's editorial team, our door is always open. No single individual can do all the fight alone.

Over the next days ahead, inshallahu, as time permits me, I will give my readers a brief analysis of my observations. This is essential so history can be documented that others may learn from the lessons offered.

Congrats compatriots! Let us all show love and support to them unconditionally.

Press Release

GPU-USA Elects New Executive

The Gambia Press Union, United States Branch (GPU-USA) has elected a new executive committee to steer the affairs of the Union for the next two years. The term of the current executive expires on December 31st, 2009. Former PRO and Gainako editor Demba Baldeh was elected Secretary General to replace Baba Galleh Jallow; Bubacar Ceesay of AllGambian replaces Fatou Jaw Manneh as Deputy Secretary General; Cherno Baba Jallow replaces Demba Baldeh as Public Relations Officer; Lamin Jatta replaces Joe Sambou as Treasurer; Pa Samba Jow replaces Lamin Jatta as Auditor; and Modou Nyang replaces Emuran Saidy as Social Affairs Secretary. Haruna Darbo and Christine Sukuna who showed up to offer their moral support, were nominated and accepted honorary membership of the new executive. Both Mr. Darbo and Ms Sukuna had earlier been invited and graciously accepted associate membership of the GPU-USA. Outgoing secretary general Baba Galleh Jallow was also nominated an honorary member of the new executive. The elections were held at a well-attended conference call meeting on Sunday, November 8, 2009.

Prior to the elections both new and old members expressed sentiments regarding the nature and work of the GPU-USA. Outgoing secretary general Baba Galleh Jallow said he was not seeking re-election in order to aid the fight against the myth of the indispensability of leaders. “Everyone can be replaced,” he said, adding that he was absolutely certain that the GPU-USA has members perfectly capable of running the affairs of the Union. He thanked outgoing members of the executive and assured the new executive that they all would continue offering their support and participating actively in the affairs of GPU-USA. The new executive will formally take over the affairs of the Union with effect from January 1, 2010.

Signed on behalf of the GPU-USA,

Demba Baldeh, Outgoing PRO

Baba Galleh Jallow, Outgoing Secretary General
