Dear Demba,

Thank you for your kind understanding. Indeed, you can rest assured that  my services are always available to the GPU-USA. It doesn't matter whether I am on the executive or not. I am just trying to make sure that we do the right thing here. Since the Constitution says only two honorary members may be nominated, I think we should stick with that provision. I am absolutely certain that our new executive has some brilliant minds on it and that you guys will do a great job of your responsibilities. Thanks again and good luck with everything.

Mawdo Baba,

Thanks for all your valuable services to the GPU and your general efforts to educate and enlighten our citizenry. On a personal note and in regarding your honorary position, I completely understand your decline base on a constitutional provision and personal principle.

To be honest, many of us felt a lot of pressure to accept positions that we were not so prepared to accept as of yet. However, your nomination to the honorary position carried significant importance as the members wanted to make sure that you remain within our reach (which am sure you will) to continue to offer guidance and advice where necessary. Thus the reasons why so many of us insisted in keeping you close to the day to day administration of the GPU.

However, having worked with you,  I am reassured of your continous availability to the services of the GPU and I hope my colleagues will be as well. I have no doubt it will not make any difference in your contributions whether you are part of the executive or not.  We will continue to count on you and many others in months and years to come especially in the areas of the website where your invaluable writings and engagements will make a significant difference.

Respectfully yours

Demba

Dear Friends,

During the nomination and lection of a new Executive yesterday, Sunday Novemebr 8, some memebrs of the GPU-USA insited that I accept a nomination to be one of the honorary memebrs of tyhe Executive. In spite of my persistent declining, some members kept insisting on it till I caved in.

Upon further careful reflection, however, and while the iron is still hot, I have decided that the right thing to do is to decline the position and step down and aside. Here's why:

1. Before the elections, I had repeatedly said, publicly, that I would not be accepting nomination to serve in ANY CAPACITY on the new executive. I do not want to go back on that promise. I know the new secretary general and his new team can do an execellent job of running the GPU-USA with or without me on the board.

2. Most importantly, Section 6 of the GPU-USA clearly stipulates that only TWO honorary members may be added to the elected executive officials. And we have two great people to serve that function. Taking up this position will be against the letter of our consitution and therefore setting a bad, or at any rate an unhealthy precendent for our Union, and by extension, our dear country.

In the light of the above considerations, and convinced that the new executive is more than eqaul to the tasks before them, I wish to announce that I am stepping down from my honorary membership of the new executive. I will, of course, remain an active member of the GPU-USA and will offer my advice as and when needed. I crave the understanding of those members who insisted on my accepting to serve in that capacity on the new executive.

Thank you all.
