Dear Friends,
During the nomination and lection of a new Executive yesterday, Sunday Novemebr 8, some memebrs of the GPU-USA insited that I accept a nomination to be one of the honorary memebrs of tyhe Executive. In spite of my persistent declining, some members kept insisting on it till I caved in.
Upon further careful reflection, however, and while the iron is still hot, I have decided that the right thing to do is to decline the position and step down and aside. Here's why:
1. Before the elections, I had repeatedly said, publicly, that I would not be accepting nomination to serve in ANY CAPACITY on the new executive. I do not want to go back on that promise. I know the new secretary general and his new team can do an execellent job of running the GPU-USA with or without me on the board.
2. Most importantly, Section 6 of the GPU-USA clearly stipulates that only TWO honorary members may be added to the elected executive officials. And we have two great people to serve that function. Taking up this position will be against the letter of our consitution and therefore setting a bad, or at any rate an unhealthy precendent for our Union, and by extension, our dear country.
In the light of the above considerations, and convinced that the new executive is more than eqaul to the tasks before them, I wish to announce that I am stepping down from my honorary membership of the new executive. I will, of course, remain an active member of the GPU-USA and will offer my advice as and when needed. I crave the understanding of those members who insisted on my accepting to serve in that capacity on the new executive.
Thank you all.
Baba
